Does what you say you value still match what actually happens?

They match. We do what we say. Mostly. There is some drift in places. The gap is wide enough that people have noticed. The values statement is a running joke internally.

When something goes wrong, how long does it take you to hear about it?

Immediately. People tell me hard things. Within a few days, usually. Late, and usually from the wrong person. I find out when it is already someone else's problem.

Every organization has a Barb. Payroll happens on Fridays because Barb says payroll happens on Fridays. How much of your operation runs on somebody's habit rather than a decision?

Very little. Our processes are written down and followed. A few things, and we know which ones. More than I am comfortable admitting. If Barb left tomorrow we would not know what broke until it broke.

Is there a person everyone works around instead of with?

No. Friction gets handled directly. One or two, and it is manageable. Yes, and people have started rearranging their work to avoid them. Yes, and we have lost good people over it.

Is there something that already happened that still has not been dealt with?

No. We close things out. One thing, and there is a plan for it. Yes, and it comes up again every few weeks. Yes, and everyone is waiting to see who says it out loud first.

If this ended up in front of your board, your funder, or a reporter next week, how ready are you?

Ready. We could explain ourselves and stand behind it. We would scramble, but we would be fine. It would be a bad week and it would cost us. That is roughly why I am on this page.
